The Confederation of African Football (African Confederation – CAF) said on Saturday that it decided to support the renewal of the Sepp Blatter presidency of the FIFA in the elections to be held next year.
“Africa will express its unanimous support to President Blatter in the upcoming elections,” Hisham Al -Amrani, Secretary -General of the African Union, told a press conference held in the Ethiopian capital, Edis Ababa.
CAF had conducted a series of meetings in the Ethiopian capital this week, after which Cameroon was chosen to organize the African Nations Cup 2019, followed by Ivory Coast in 2012 and Guinea in 2023.
Although Al -Amrani’s statement does not force the 54 African federations to vote for Balater, most of them are likely to do so.
Blatter is very popular in African football circles for several reasons, including his success in bringing the World Cup to the continent in 2010 when South Africa hosted the tournament.
Blatter has also sought since his assumption of the position of President of the International Federation in 1998 to provide material assistance and the establishment of development programs for African federations.
Even when Kaf president, Issa Hayatou, nominated himself to head the International Federation and Blatter’s competition 12 years ago, many African countries voted for Balater.
There is no competitor to Balatir in the upcoming elections until now.
The French Jerome Champin, a former FIFA official, has recently said he wanted to compete with Blatter, but he must obtain support and nomination of at least five member states.
